The Beautification Engine
Technology has come up with a gadget that has disturbing implications socially. Called the Beautification Engine this is software that can take the picture of any person and then correct to fit “white” standards of what is beautiful. The software is based on evolutionary biology and uses standards such as wide set high, a long distance between hairline and child like eyes to transform existing photographs into “ideally beautiful” pictures of the same person.
This doctoring program is a computer program that uses math to create the theoretically more attractive version of a person while at the same time maintaining an unmistakable similarityto the original person. It was developed by computer scientists in Isreal. They used the responses of 68 men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 to help the pick facial traits and features so that the program could decide what was the most attractive. The group that decided what was beautiful was from Germany and Isreal.
Scientists took the data and invented a calculation involving 234 measurements between facial features, including the distances between lips and chin, the forehead and the eyes, or between the eyes. A computer determines the most attractive measurements for each submitted face and then uses alygorythms to determine what the ideal is. The reason this is such a breakthrough in terms of being a software gadget is because it looks at the entire face of the individual rather than just the eye or chin length only.
This computer generated version of what is hot or not was created from the photographs of 92 women and 33 men that the study group chose as being the most creteivity. Only the geometry of the face is changed in these photos. Wrinkles, hair color and eye and hair color are left intact.
There has been a lot of interest in programs like this lately because they are such a fascinating merge of beauty and silence. It is fascinating to all kinds of academic and also sociologists. This is because there is much agreement among what humans collectively see as an attractive feature in a person. Smooth skin, vividly colored eyes, a small chin, big lips and wide set eyes are most attractive in a person. It does not matter what culture, race, age or gender that you are.
However this program is also provocative because it does raise all sorts of issues about genetic and social profiling and what we perceive as beautiful in society. Feminists and philosophers would say that it is a mistake ethically to qualify beauty in this manner as it exaggerates the whole idea of judging a book by its cover. Unfortunately the images that are revealed really do seem to fit the beauty magazine ideal of what is beautiful even though the criteria for beautiful was actually picked by a group of humans. Also disturbing is that this program does not include any kind of cultural diversity.
