According to a very interesting story in the entertainment section of the Telegraph frustration with Gadgets actually peaks at 11;48 am on Christmas Day. This is presumably just after most people in the world have finished opening their presents and are starting to fool around with them.
This study was done by a company called The Techguys which is one of the largest technical support providers in the United Kingdom’s. When they analyzed when they were called they found that their help lines were the absolute busiest between 11:40 am and 11:56 am on Charismas morning with the absolute peak of emergency happening right at that 11:48 point.
So what were the majority of these calls about? The main focus seemed to be concern about setting up new laptops and computers and trying to figure out how to connect them to wireless networks.
Of course the company could also not help but report how impatient people are on Christmas Day as that is when they are the most impatient to have these gadgets work. Furthermore it seems that the company found that fifteen percent of people who get gadgets as a Christmas gift have been so frustrated bit he process of getting it to work that they have either returned it, given it away, sold it or just left it untouched in the box for a year.
Yet another amusing thing about this is that the company survey found that a whopping TWO THIRDS of people who got some kind of gizmo or gadget for Christmas; simply refused to crack open and read the user’s manual that comes with it. The justification for this in most cases was that the consumer thought that the booklet was badly written, inaccurately translated or simply too difficult to understand. The result was many phone calls to the TechGuys.
It turns out that some of these complaints were legitimate. An analysis of instruction manuals by a writer of dictionaries named David Crystal turned out the fact that many use highly complex terms that only specialists within the technology field would be able to understand.
The company also put out instructions on how to be less frustrated on Xmas Day. For one thing you need to make sure you have a stash of batteries on hand. Another helpful thing would be to make sure that you have enough controllers for any game you buy. Additional cables may also be necessary to run certain entertainment devices.
You should also not fear asking your ten year old kid for help. You may have more techno wizards in your family then you ever knew!
