There is an entire line of gadgetry devoted just to what is known as light marking. Light marking basically refers to tiny devices that have diodes or tiny lasers in them . They tend to be miniature and charming objects.
One of the tiniest of these markers in existence is called the quarter marker. It is basically a small clip with a diode in it that can hold about $1.25 in quarters. If you flip them one way it turns red and if you flip it the other it turns green. On some models it flips from red to yellow. You can get it to shine green if you put the small cell battery in one way and shine red if you put in another way.
Illumineering makes a good gadget like this that also comes with a small strip of colored plastic that is called an OFF STRIP. To turn the quarter marker laser light off you have to slip the plastic or gel strip under the battery contact and this cuts the power. If you lose it you have to take the battery in and out in order to have any effect.
So just what are these small quarter markers used for. Well for one thing they are used by dancers so that they can easilyfind their marks on stage. They glow more brightly than the glow tape that is usually used to help dancers find their marks. Yet at the same time the glow is quite discreet.
They are also placed on the edges of furniture or the hard legs of furniture so that a person can find their mark on stage. They are also placed on hand railings, to mark hand knobs and on the corners of tables in dark clubs so that people don’t hurt themselves. They are also quite easily held in place with gum, tape or glue. Velcro dots also work well to sticking these things to most surfaces.
Other popular beacons are called the Snap It and Blink It beacons. These are miniature lights with LED batteries that attach to standard 9 volt batteries. They give off a very small but visible light that is usually reed yellow or green in color. They have the same uses that the quarter marker lights have.
The Snap It Beacons are devices that snap onto miniature 9 volt batteries. You can then clip them anywhere that you want. The Blink It devices are identical but they have a flash rate of blinking about every second. The Blink It light marking gadgetry is more of use as warning device to perhaps alert people of a protruding sign or piece of electrical equipment. They are of especial use on theatrical or film equipment such as lighting booms which of course can swing back in forth in big dangerous ways. Another great thing is that they can be positioned so that the audience can’t see them but the performers on the stage easily can without having a lot of light flooding their eyes and making them squint.
