Homage to Neon Car Lights

Neon car lights aren’t for everybody. Although you sometimes do see the occasional guy in his forties going through a mid life carriage with these neon tubes attached to the undercarriage of his car you are more likely to find them casting their eerie light beneath the cars of adolescents and males in their early twenties. Neon car lights have become one of those almost kitsch custom car accessories that screams that the driver is compensating for a lack of real machismo. This is because neon car lights are so showy.  Not only do they scream “Look at me!” they also scream ‘Arrest me!” as studies have shown that police are more likely to pull over a vehicle that has neon car lights. They symbolize a certain type anti-authoritarian attitude and are also usually accompanied by neighborhood traumatizing sound systems with pounding sub woofers.

Still, some consider neon car lights to be a work of art. People who customize both old and contemporary cars are especially fond of them because they give a car a kind of tacky drama. However even though they seem like they might be quite easy to install they actually are not and might be best left up to a professional, especially if their warranty is voided by do-it-yourself attempts.

One of the biggest obstacles to installing neon car lights successfully is their positioning. As these are glowing lights, and not bright lights, they have to be positioned in a way that does not allow any of the undercarriage to block out their light.  This means that they must be installed slightly below yet level with the undercarriage, which is apparently easier said then done.  However if you position the neon tubes to low you risk damaging them on speed bumps and on gravel roads.  The upshot of all this is that if you have a car with a low undercarriage it is probably a waste of money to install neon lights on it no matter how cool it looks.

Your only other option is to never drive the car on high ground or on a gravel road, which is often exactly what happens to show cars that get customized with neon lights for auto exhibitions.

If you are going to install the neon car lights beneath your car all by yourself you are probably well advised to purchase a neon car lights installation kit. These are special under car kits that come with uniquely designed mounting brackets that allow you to rotate and position the neon tubes so that you can direct their light wherever you want. This can also help create interesting light effects besides the typical direction of the neon glow towards the pavement. If you have this type of mounting bracketing kit you can also direct the neon car lights to create a glow that extends out the sides of the vehicle, far in front of it or far behind it like an inverse shadow.  Another good thing about neon car light kits like this is that they are meant for self-installation so your warranty is not voided if you try to install it yourself.
