Should You Rescue Your Dead Gadget?
If you have a dead gadget you might be at a loss as to whether or not you should try to fix it or whether you should try to repair it.
The first thing you need to decide is how dead the gadget is as some situations are irreparable. For instance if your cell phone has gone through the washing machine it is probably not ever going to come back to life. However if it simply has a shattered LED display because you dropped it, maybe it can be fixed.
Usually it is easier to fix bad software then hardware. A loose connection is often at fault when it comes to killing gadgets. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater by getting rid of a gadget that is only in simple need of having a connection tightened up or a wire replaced. This is especially true of VCRs and iPods.
You can often pay to have a small fee to have the problem diagnoses. Stores like Radio Shack will often assess this sort of thing for about twenty bucks. Cost should definitely be a factor. If the repairs cost less than forty percent of a new one then it is probably a good idea to fix it. Lets just say that if it costs more than a hundred bucks and is less than three years old and can be repaired for less than forty percent of what you paid for it then it would be worth it.
Making a decision on whether or not to replace it might also depend on how old it is as the likelihood of obsolescence should always be a factor . Devices such as VCRs, speakers, tube-based TVs, and turntables haven’t changed much in ten years, so new models won’t be a lot better than what you have now. The less digital something is, the better a candidate it is for repair.. You can often find rare or vintage parts online.
If you decide to fix it consider having it done where you bought it or look at the warranty that came with the gadget. Make sure you back up any data that is on the gadget before you bring it in.
Yet another thing to consider is fixing itself. There is advice online about this if you care to look for it. Still for the most part it is best to take it to an expert if the repair is not super-simple in nature, such as fixing a loose connection!
