If you have a dead gadget you might be at a loss as to whether or not you should try to fix it or whether you should try to repair it.
The first thing you need to decide is how dead the gadget is as some situations are irreparable. For instance if your cell phone has gone through the washing machine it is probably not ever going to come back to life. However if it simply has a shattered LED display because you dropped it, maybe it can be fixed.
Usually it is easier to fix bad software then hardware. A loose connection is often at fault when it comes to killing gadgets. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater by getting rid of a gadget that is only in simple need of having a connection tightened up or a wire replaced. This is especially true of VCRs and iPods.
You can often pay to have a small fee to have the problem diagnoses. Stores like Radio Shack will often assess this sort of thing for about twenty bucks. Cost should definitely be a factor. If the repairs cost less than forty percent of a new one then it is probably a good idea to fix it. Lets just say that if it costs more than a hundred bucks and is less than three years old and can be repaired for less than forty percent of what you paid for it then it would be worth it.
Making a decision on whether or not to replace it might also depend on how old it is as the likelihood of obsolescence should always be a factor . Devices such as VCRs, speakers, tube-based TVs, and turntables haven’t changed much in ten years, so new models won’t be a lot better than what you have now. The less digital something is, the better a candidate it is for repair.. You can often find rare or vintage parts online.
If you decide to fix it consider having it done where you bought it or look at the warranty that came with the gadget. Make sure you back up any data that is on the gadget before you bring it in.
Yet another thing to consider is fixing itself. There is advice online about this if you care to look for it. Still for the most part it is best to take it to an expert if the repair is not super-simple in nature, such as fixing a loose connection!

How to Buy Used Gadgets

Every now and then you see a deal online or in stores for a used gadget. Should you try and buy it.
Sometimes you can end up buying gear that is used accidently. This stuff is usually labeled “refurbished” or “factory reconditioned.”
Different website and stores use different descriptions so it is a good idea to investigate whether or not the gadget is actually used if you are not sure. Many busy stores and sites also have a lot of inventory going through their site day after day so it is a good idea to check back and look for deals whenever you can.
Used electronics are not a good idea nor is buying anything with a lot of moving parts like a multi-disc changer. You can’t replace this type of part if it is broken for good.
It is also a bad idea to buy television sets and monitors that are used. This is because bulbs burn out, tubes fade and pixels die. On the other hand, amplifiers, AV receivers, and some single-disc DVD players will hold their value, even if they don’t offer the latest 6.1-channel home-theater experience. Used speakers can be a good choice, too, though they’re generally not something you want to buy without listening to first.
If you’re purchasing a used computer, a handheld, or something similar it is important to assess how old it is…as a rule of thumb try not to buy anything that is more than six months old.
Try to get a warranty with it. The best protection is to buy reputable products from dealers who give you 30 days to change your mind, Ideally, the product will come with the original manufacturer’s warranty (usually at least a year), but many refurbished goods offer only 90 days. However if adding an extended warranty costs a lot you might want to buy new in the first place.
Price it right: Don’t go higher than 80 percent–or below 50 percent–of what the device costs new, and beware of stores that try to sell you too many “extras like chargers and power cords
You’ll get the best prices from private sellers, many of whom sell via auction sites. Stick with sellers who meet the requirements for being part of the PayPal Buyer Protection program, which will reimburse you for up to $1000 if you get ripped off. The best strategy? Know who you’re buying from before you pull out your credit card!

The movies have great gadgets in them. Some of them would be very useful if they existed in real life.
A great example is the Memory Eraser Pen used in the movies Men in Black and Men in Black II. flash. It would come handy in every situation especially if you have a tendency of screwing up everything. Did you mess up the work at office? Flash it at the boss. Is someone angry with you? Give him a flash. Did your lover dump you? Flash it at yourself and forget what happened.
How about having the R2D2 Robot as seen in Star Wars as your best buddy. It could be your personal butler. It could serve you drinks, rub your feet, fetch the newspaper. It could do practically anything you wanted except have sex with you. Furthermore it could be like a big USB storage unit, only it is on wheels. Speaking of wheels you could get it to pull things for you as well. It could tow your groceries home or tow your dirty laundry to the Laundromat.
Another great gadget to own would be that super sophisticated computer that you see in the movie Minority Report. This is a very cool computer because it is clear like a big windshield. You stand in front of it and wave your hands around like it was a Wii unit. Computers without keyboards are cool gadgets in general.
Yet another whimsical gadget that should be invented is the Copter Hat as seen in the movie Inspector Gadget. This is just an ordinary men’s hat with whirling helicopter blades on top. Aside from allowing you to fly from building to building this gadget also could be quite useful. It could be used to lift the elderly or disabled up staircases.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could just get a full education by sitting in a chair? Remember the chair in the Matrix. Keanu Reaves got full accreditation and training as a helicopter pilot simply by sitting inside it for a few minutes.
One of the most interesting gadgets recently seen in a movie is the Swiss Army Knife that was featured in the new Get Smart movie. It had all the usual functions but also a few extras such as a blowgun, flame thrower and a mini harpoon gun.
Finally who would not want the bat mobile! Although its not exactly a gadget it is the coolest gadget ridden car ever invented in movie history – even beating out some of the more glamorous gadget ridden cars seen in the James Bond movies.
