Talking to Gadgets

When it comes to building gadgets, voice commands are where it is at. This is because many gadgets are getting so many functions that some simplicity is called for. For the device to be useful it should be able to interact with all of it features.

More and more functions mean more and more buttons—and humans have stubbornly remained the same size and shape. A button can be made only so small before it becomes impossible to press. You can only miniaturize buttons so many times in a row before they are too small to operate. Also it is difficult to remember duplicate keypad button functions. That is also why touch screens and gesture recognition are becoming even more important.

AT&T is one company that is really trying to accelerate its research, development and invention of gadgets that will follow instructions. It wants you to be able simply to talk to an electronic device and obey you… While some cell phones already offer voice recognition for basic tasks, such as looking up phone numbers in a contact list, AT&T envisions devices that can handle much more complicated voice commands, such as “Tell me where I can find the nearest GAP sotre” or “Order me some Chinese food.”

The AT&T device we will soon see in development is known as Watson. It is complex so it runs on centralized servers on the internet. Fortunately most devices, including phones, have the ability to acess the internet. This means that just about any device can be blessed with voice recognition. The command is sent over the phone and then instructed to devices once it is translated to computers by the internet accessible Watson software.

The Watson software analyzes the speech and sends back a digital response that the device can translate into commands. To demonstrate the principle, AT&T researchers have built a voice-operated television remote control that is designed to answer really complex demands such as “Find me the latest movie starring Brad Pitt!”
